Dudh Pokhari is a small but beautiful village in the Lamjung District in the Gandaki Zone of northern-central Nepal. The name Dudh Pokhari is derived from the lake which lies in the base of Himalchuli.

Mount HimalChuli

Himalchuli, which lies in the Dudh Pokhari village development committee is the second highest mountain in the Mansiri Himal, part of the Nepalese Himalayas. It lies south of Manaslu, one of the eight-thousanders. Himalchuli has three main peaks: East (7893 m), West (7540 m), and North (7371 m).

Himalchuli is the 18th highest mountain in the world (using a cutoff of 500m prominence, or re-ascent). It is also notable for its large vertical relief over local terrain. For example, it rises 7000m over the Marshyangdi River to the southwest in about 27 km (17 mi) horizontal distance.

People know very little about this place. But, it is one of the most scenic destinations in the world where tourists have rarely trekked. Nature and culture are the specialties of this area with plenty of options for off the beaten path travelers. This can be a great interest in the new route of trekking in the Annapurna Region of Nepal.

Khaling Rais is the dominant class of the Ethenic group in the Dudh Pokhari area. They have their own language and are proactive both in joint and nuclear family ties. Chhyang (locally fermented millet/rice wine) is an indispensable part of their food and culture. The Bhume Dance, the Chandi Dance, and the Naghi Pooja are some of their major rituals.

These highlanders (Khaling Rais) believe that it is essential to worship their ancestors and the earth deity in order to continue human existence. Despite belonging to the Kirat ethnic group, the Khaling Rais celebrate the Hindu and Buddhist festivals as well.
